“A book that tells the story of Judge Rosario Livatino and also highlights his thoughts, his enlightening reflections on the relationship between justice and charity, and what it means to exercise justice in a noble way, with love. Well-written, passionately and accurately, I really enjoyed this book”.

The Story

Sicily is a land that leaves you breathless. Scenes of unprecedented beauty, where the wildest aspects coexist with the most domestic ones, suffused with calm sweetness, unfold before the eyes of its visitors, amidst vibrant colors and intense scents that saturate the air: of almond and orange trees, jasmine and lemons…
Here, in this land of striking contrasts and enchanting beauty, Rosario Livatino is born. Since he was a child, he feels the call of justice. And he has no doubt: when he grows up, he will become a judge.
But how difficult it is to be one in this land…
On September 21, 1990, at the age of 38 not yet reached, he is killed by the mafia in Agrigento on the road he used to travel every day to work at the Agrigento courthouse.
Honest, incorruptible, Rosario Livatino, the young judge as he was soon called, scared the mafia. They killed him without knowing that the grain of wheat fallen into the ground produces much fruit.
He has been recognized as a “martyr of faith” by Pope Francis and elevated to the glory of the altars as Blessed on May 9, 2021.
It is written: “Those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever” (Daniel 12:3).

Edited in 2021 with important updates regarding his Beatification process, this book tells us the story of Judge Rosario Livatino, who was killed by the Agrigento mafia and recognized as a “martyr of faith” by Pope Francis, to be elevated to the glory of the altars as Blessed on May 9, 2021.
A witness of our times. In love with life, justice, truth. Italy came to know him from the pages of newspapers, when it learned about his barbaric murder that took place on September 21, 1990, in Sicily at the hands of the Agrigento mafia, the “stidda.” Rosario Livatino was a martyr for the cause of justice. He was a judge and a Christian who lived his entire short life to fulfill a task to which he felt called since childhood: being a judge was his vocation.
In this book, there is his story, with memories from those who knew him well and his personal reflections on justice, his discouragements entrusted to a secret diary, the dark nights of the soul he experienced before his tragic end, and also his unwavering faith, his life of authentic charity that makes him a witness today, pointed out by the Catholic Church as a model.
“Rosario Livatino. Justice Demands Love” by Maria Amata Di Lorenzo is a book that introduces us to Rosario Livatino and the deeper meaning of his life and ideals, as a legacy to pass on to the younger generations: justice demands love.
